Archives of This report summarizes our 5-year experience with cryosurgery for in situ ablation of liver tumors. The liver was exposed with laparotomy, and the tumors were subjected to two freeze-thaw cycles using liquid nitrogen delivered by insulated probes; cryoablation was monitored with intra-operative ultrasonography. Tumor markers and computed tomography evaluated tumor response during long-term follow-up. From 1985 to 1990, 32 patients (19 men and 13 women) were entered into this study. The histologic characteristics of the tumors were as follows" colorectal, 24 patients; hepatoma, three patients; neuroendocrine, two patients; and others, three patients. After a follow-up period of 5 to 60 months (median follow-up, 24 months), nine patients (28%) remained disease free, 11 patients (34%) were alive with disease, and 12 patients (38%) died. The patterns of failure included liver and extrahepatic disease in 54% of cases, liver disease only in 32% of cases, and extrahepatic disease only in 14% of cases. In patients with "liver only" failure, recurrence at the treatment site occurred in three patients (9%). This study establishes the long-term effectiveness of cryosurgery in the treatment of primary and metastatic liver tumors. PAPER DISCUSSION KEY WORDS" Liver secondary carcinoma, cryosurgery This paper reports the use of cryosurgery in the treatment of liver tumours and raises two interesting issues: the value of cryodestruction as a technique for destroying malignant tumours in general and more specifically for the management of liver tumours.

Knowledge and Awareness about Cryosurgery among Dental Practitioners
Background: Cryosurgery is typically used for tumors or precancerous lesions found on your skin. However, some tumors inside the body can be treated this way as well. Advances in cryosurgery technology have dramatically reduced the long-term side effects once associated with the treatment. So this technology must made aware among dentists for the wellness among the patients. Aim: The aim of thi...
متن کاملLong-term survival after hepatic cryosurgery versus surgical resection for metastatic colorectal carcinoma: a critical review of the literature.
OBJECTIVE To critically assess the evidence for long-term survival after hepatic resection and hepatic cryosurgery for metastatic colorectal cancer. The purpose of this review is to determine if a randomized controlled trial comparing these two treatment modalities is justified. DATA SOURCES A review of the medical literature from 1973 to 1995 using the MEDLINE and CANCERLIT databases. Refere...
متن کاملA reappraisal of cryosurgery for eyelid basal cell carcinomas.
BACKGROUND/AIMS Liquid nitrogen spray freezing has been successfully applied for basal cell carcinomas in the eyelid region, but is not yet in general use. The reasons for this were analysed and the development of a more reliable, safer cryosurgical technique aimed for. METHODS New cryosurgical apparatus, contact probes with increased freezing power, and a special application technique were d...
متن کاملCryotherapy for liver tumors.
The curative management of primary and metastatic liver tumors has traditionally relied on surgical resection. Unfortunately, fewer than 10% of newly diagnosed patients have tumors that are considered to be surgically resectable. Limitations that often preclude a safe surgical resection include bilobar or centrally located tumors, insufficient hepatic reserve, cirrhosis, and/or associated comor...
متن کاملCryosurgery for isolated liver tumors or associated with complex liver resection: a series of 38 patients.
BACKGROUND The aim of this prospective study is to assess the outcomes of cryosurgery for liver tumors, as a single treatment or associated to liver resections in conjunction or not with other visceral resections. MATERIAL AND METHODS Between 2001 and 2011, in our institution,70 hepatic tumors have been treated through cryo surgery in 38 patients. Complications and survival were assessed,acco...
